MA Baby promotes strike in Jhilmil Industrial Taluka of East Delhi.
Workers were burnt to death in a closed room in Nazirabad. The incident of the death of about thirty workers is spreading the message of strike in different parts of the country. In Chhattisgarh, SECL workers came out in large numbers. CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby held a campaign rally in Delhi's Jhilmil Shilpa Taluka on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the international forum World Federation of Trade Unions has sent a message of solidarity to the central trade unions. The United Kisan Morcha has taken to the streets in support of the strike of ten central trade unions.
Baby told the workers' meeting that the Labor Code law is not only anti-worker, but also takes away all legal rights from the working class and hands them over to corporates.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Delhi, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Arun Kumar said about the Nazirabad incident. He said that if there had been monitoring by the labour department, if inspectors had come regularly, the workers would not have had to stay in locked houses. They couldn't get out even after the fire broke out.
The CITU called this incident an 'institutional murder', not a mere accident. In campaigns across the country, labor movement leaders say that such incidents are happening again and again. Despite this, the country's government has repealed 29 labor laws and passed four labor codes. The government is even criminalizing organized protests.
Baby said that what the four labor codes say means that the employer can fire the worker at any time if he falls ill or reaches old age. There is a provision to completely waive the liability for social security like pension from PF and Provident Fund.
Baby said, the February 12 strike is not a fight for a wage increase. It is a fight to save the country, to save the working class, to protect their dignity. The government is trying to turn the working class into slaves. It is a fight to stop it.
Gebra mine of South Eastern Coalfields Limited in Korba district of Chhattisgarh. Workers there marched in groups. They responded to the fight to protect their dignity.
The World Federation of Trade Unions said in a message that it is deeply outraged that four labor codes have been passed in India in which the right to strike and the right to bargain have been abolished. State-owned assets are being privatized. The working class in India is opposing this with good reason.
