US President Donald Trump has again warned Venezuela's new interim government. The White House has set a set of tough conditions for the new administration led by Delcy Rodriguez after the fall of Nicolas Maduro. The Trump administration's clear message is that Venezuela will only be allowed to extract oil from its own mines if it cuts off all economic ties with China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba.
According to a report by ABC News, the Trump administration wants Venezuela to maintain a partnership with the United States only in terms of oil production. In addition, America must also prioritize the sale of Venezuela's valuable "heavy crude oil." Trump has publicly claimed that he now effectively controls the South American country.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US now has the best chance to force Venezuela to comply with these conditions. Venezuelan oil tankers are currently full due to US sanctions. They have been forced to shut down their wells since the end of December because they have no place to store new oil. According to US experts, Caracas will be financially bankrupt within the next few weeks if it cannot sell the oil it has.
Trump has claimed that Venezuela's interim authorities will hand over about 30 to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States. Trump said he would control the money from the sale of this oil.
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker said the plan does not require the deployment of US troops. Instead, the US will maintain control over Venezuelan oil ships and tankers. He made it clear, "Not a single ship will go to Havana (Cuba)."
China has long been the largest buyer of Venezuelan oil. Trump's intransigence has raised international concerns about the stability of Venezuela's economy and the power of Delcy Rodriguez.
