The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) on Saturday expressed outrage over the misbehavior of UNI journalists by the Delhi Police. CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby also strongly condemned the misbehavior of journalists.
MA Baby said that he strongly condemns the raids and misbehavior of journalists by Delhi Police and paramilitary forces at the offices of news agency UNI. He wrote in X, "There are allegations that journalists were dragged out of UNI's Rafi Marg office and misbehaved with them. Such arbitrary behavior, lack of prior notice and misbehavior towards everyone, including women workers, is unbecoming of a democracy."
He further wrote, "A free media cannot function in fear. The administration must accept responsibility for this injustice. The dignity of journalists must be restored."
On that day, a large number of police entered the UNI newsroom and told the journalists working on the night shift to leave the office immediately. They were told that UNI was being evicted in view of the High Court order. But no order was shown.
The journalists asked for time to inform their higher authorities. Many of them were then mistreated. Video footage shows that female journalists were also physically pushed and thrown out. The journalists were not given any time to remove their personal papers and belongings.
