War is being waged against the people, stop SIR, MA Baby's letter to Gyanesh Kumar

The SIR has practically taken on the form of a war against the people. The foundation of democracy, universal suffrage, is in danger. This process must be abolished.

CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby made this demand in a letter sent to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Baby expressed concern that many legitimate names will be left out, citing issues such as extreme opacity, administrative chaos, and lack of time surrounding the process. He specifically mentioned the 'logical discrepancy' or 'reasonable inconsistency' introduced in West Bengal in the middle of the process. The notice was sent citing this reason. He said that the most controversial is the SIR process in West Bengal. A large section is suffering from severe anxiety. Some have even attempted suicide.

Baby questioned why SIR is being carried out in West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which are on the verge of elections. He said that instead of regular revisions in the voter list, the process is being used to conduct a roundabout NRC.

It is worth noting that the hearing process in West Bengal is ending on Saturday as the schedule has been postponed on the orders of the Supreme Court. Images of unreasonable harassment have been captured across the state surrounding the hearing of the notices sent in the name of 'unmapped' i.e. 2002 list and 'reasonable inconsistency'.

Today, the Commission has again sent a letter with the list of names of the officers sent by the state government. The question has been raised whether all the officers in this list are 'Group B' officers.

Baby's letter says the SIR process is chaotic, opaque, one-sided and exclusionary. The validity of the new voter list and the fundamental right to vote are being questioned.

The letter raised issues such as unrealistic deadlines, lack of discussion, burdening voters, etc. Baby also raised the issue of allowing large numbers of Form 7 submissions while excluding certain sections.

In the case of West Bengal, it is said that the 'reasonable discrepancy' was detected through an opaque software system. Contrary to what was said in the Supreme Court, the software is automatically issuing notices.

It has been said that in West Bengal, election officials are being made to perform quasi-judicial duties. Due to the very short time, about 1.5 crore people are in danger. The commission has also appointed micro observers in parallel, bypassing the regular system.

Baby reminded that the CPI(M) has been opposing the SIR process from the beginning. Regular revision of the voter list is essential for democracy. That is a legal process. But the SIR did not just come to correct the voter list. Baby said that even though it is not the commission's responsibility, it is trying to fix citizenship.
