A video from Tuesday at the university’s Electronic City campus shows Professor Dr. Muralidhar Deshpande aggressively using the term in front of around 60 students.
According to the video, he allegedly referred to the student, Affan, as a “terrorist” at least 13 times and made additional abusive remarks.
The professor is heard shouting, “Do you feel no shame,” before adding, “I thought I will be very calm today.”
The professor is also accused of making a series of abusive remarks, including blaming “people like him” for the Iran war, saying that Donald Trump would “come and take him away,” and telling the student that he would “go to hell.”
Meanwhile, many allege that the CCTV footage of the incident was deleted and that some students who supported Affan faced disciplinary action. While the professor reportedly submitted a written apology to the institution, he has not directly apologised to the student.
Following a complaint, the university suspended Deshpande on Friday pending an inquiry, as confirmed in a letter from the vice-chancellor.
“A case of student complaint has been received. Pending detailed enquiry into the matter you are kept under suspension with immediate effect,” a letter signed by the Vice Chancellor of PES University read, without mentioning the offence.
Police have registered a non-cognizable report, and no formal case has been filed so far.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) filed a police complaint demanding strict action and a public apology, while the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) called for an FIR.
Kirthi Ganesh, state president of the National Students’ Union of India, said, “We cannot let this become a new normal in universities.”
SIO called it a “Direct Assault on the Spirit of ‘Sarva Janangada Shanthiya Thota’.”
The incident triggered widespread outrage on social media after the video went viral, with many users condemning the remarks,
