Renowned historian Professor S Irfan Habib was also harassed at Delhi University. Buckets of water and dirt were thrown at him while he was speaking at an event on the North Campus.
CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby strongly condemned the incident on Friday.
The event was organized by the student organization AISA. The organization has filed a complaint against the extremist Hindutva organization ABVP. However, the ABVP denied the allegations. S. Irfan Habib has shown in various speeches that what is being propagated from a fundamentalist and communal perspective is not history. This force has to distort history for its own politics. As a result, extremist Hindutva forces are angry with him. On Thursday, he paused for a moment when he was harassed, but then resumed speaking within four to five minutes. A literary conference was organized by AESA near the Arts Faculty of Delhi University's North Campus. S. Irfan Habib was speaking there. As soon as the video of the incident appeared on social media, it went viral within moments. Professor Habib told the media, "Twenty minutes into my speech, when I was talking about history and how history is being rewritten in the present, the bucket of water was thrown." He added, "If someone doesn't agree with what I'm saying, they can discuss it with me. This is definitely not the right way to do it." In this incident, CPAE(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby posted on social media and said, "The attack on eminent historian S. Irfan Habib at a public meeting at Delhi University has brought to the fore the deep hatred and intolerance of right-wing forces against critical thinking and the free exchange of ideas. This chaos is happening in universities, through which right-wing forces are intimidating dissenters. Efforts are being made to silence them. Those responsible for this attack must be identified immediately and strict action taken against them. Baby says history never sides with violent forces associated with divisive politics. @freemang2001gmail-com
