A study has flagged an alarming disproportionality in Nandigram, the East Midnapore Assembly constituency represented by Suvendu Adhikari, where Muslims account for 95% of voters deleted from the SIR supplementary list despite their smaller share in the electorate.
The study by the Sabar Institute has raised serious concerns over a sharp disproportionality in voter deletions in Nandigram.
According to the findings, 2,826 names have been deleted from the electoral rolls in the supplementary lists published after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Of these, 2,700 are Muslims, accounting for 95.5% of the deletions, despite Muslims making up only around 26% of the electorate in the 2021 Assembly elections.
The Election Commission of India published the first post-SIR supplementary list on March 23, and ten such lists have been released so far, identifying both deletions and approved voters.
The SIR exercise began on October 27, 2025, covering multiple states, including West Bengal.
Draft rolls published on December 16 had already excluded over 58 lakh voters under categories such as dead, duplicate, shifted or absent.
Subsequently, the preliminary post-SIR rolls released on February 28 placed more than 10,500 voters in Nandigram under “adjudication”, pending further verification.
Nandigram was a high-profile constituency in the 2021 Assembly elections, where Mamata Banerjee contested against Adhikari. The BJP leader won by a narrow margin of under 2,000 votes, with the result currently under legal challenge before the Calcutta High Court.
Sabir Ahamed of the Sabar Institute said, “This data reveals injustice and calls on people to raise their voice against it.”
Reacting to the findings, journalist Vasundhara Sirnate said there must be an inquiry into the fairness of the SIR process, adding that the “hubris of the state” lies in assuming no one would notice if the data were obscured

Although Muslims make up only 25% of the population of West Bengal’s Nandigram, they accounted for 95.5% of the deletions in seven supplementary lists released by the Election Commission as part of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in the state, according to an analysis done by a Kolkata-based research organisation.
The findings were released by the Sabar Institute on Sunday after it analysed voter roll data from supplementary lists 1, 2, 3, 4a, 7, 8 and 9.
Nandigram, part of the East Midnapore district, is represented by the Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari in the Assembly. He is contesting from the seat in the upcoming elections as well. The constituency will go to polls in the first phase on April 23.
