The 'VB Ji Ram Ji' Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha despite strong opposition. The opposition in the Lok Sabha on Thursday said that the Narendra Modi government is actually trying to end this scheme of job guarantee in villages.
The bill introduced by the Centre repeals the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act or MGNREGA and introduces the 'Developed India Rural Employment and Livelihood Guarantee Bill' or 'VB Ji Ram Ji'. The new bill proposes a 125-day work guarantee instead of 100 days, but places a large portion of the responsibility on the states.
The same day, the opposition marched to the Parliament House to protest the introduction of the new bill. Participating in the discussion, CPI(M) MP Amara Ram said that the BJP coalition government is trying to destroy job security in villages.
Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has claimed that the new bill will achieve the goal of a self-reliant rural society envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi.
After Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, obstacles have been created in the 100 Days of Work project in various ways. Allocation has been reduced. Work on this project has been stopped in West Bengal for three years. Although the corruption of the Trinamool government was cited as the reason, the BJP government at the center did not take action against the corrupt.
The CPI(M) said that the original Act had a provision to involve the rural masses in this project through Gram Sabhas. The new bill proposal clearly shows a tendency to impose the entire project from Delhi.
According to the bill's proposal, if the law is passed, the center will have to prepare and send the project within six months. However, the center will decide on which project the work will be done.
