The interim government of Bangladesh must take measures to restrain communal forces. Legal action must be taken against those involved in violence. CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby made this demand on Tuesday. He expressed deep regret over the series of crimes against minorities.
The national elections in Bangladesh will be held on February 12. Before that, there have been several cases of violence in the country. In Mymensingh, a textile worker, Dipuchandra Das, was beaten and set on fire by a fanatical mob. Such mob attacks are ongoing. Among these, there have been reports of the killing of several minorities in various incidents.
Meanwhile, a group of miscreants hacked to death a grocery trader, Mani Chakraborty (40), at Charsindur Bazar in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi, Bangladesh, on Tuesday. The incident took place around 11 pm on Monday. The deceased, Moni Chakraborty, was a resident of Sadharchar Union in the neighboring Shibpur Upazila. He had been doing grocery business in Charsindur market for a long time. He lived in Sultanpur village.
Violence was reported in at least 51 places in December. Of these, 10 were murders, 10 were thefts and robberies, and 23 were incidents of occupation, looting and arson of houses, businesses, temples and land.Four cases of detention and torture on false charges, one case of attempted rape, and three cases of physical torture. A large number of victims are from minorities.
Violence continued in the first week of January this year. On January 2, 96 acres of paddy land belonging to Satya Ranjan Das was burnt in Ramgati, Lakshmipur. Businessman Khokon Chandra Das was hacked to death and set on fire in Shariatpur on January 3.
It is worth noting that communal fundamentalist forces are also attacking minorities in India across the border. The BJP is raising its voice against the 'killing of Hindus' in Bangladesh ahead of the assembly elections due to the border. But nowhere, on either side, is the RSS' political wing demanding security for minorities.
In West Bengal, the CPI(M) has repeatedly taken to the streets to protest the violence and religious politics of religious communal forces everywhere. Meanwhile, Baby said, a month ago, Rabindranath Tagore's family home was attacked in Bangladesh. The museum in Shahjadpur was vandalized. Cultural institutions like Chhayanaut and Udichi, as well as media offices, were not spared.
