This year (2026), October 17 marks the 107th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of India. The Communist Party of India was founded in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, a Soviet Union founded through the November Revolution.
On 17 October 1920, under the influence of the Russian Revolution and in an important historical phase of India’s independence movement, the Communist Party of India was founded in Tashkent, then Soviet Russia. M. N. Roy, Avani Mukherjee, Evelina Trent Roy, Rosa Fittinghobs, Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Shafiq Siddiqui – some of the revolutionaries were associated with this initiative. Muhammad Shafiq Siddiqui was elected the first General Secretary of the party.
The ideals of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the liberation of workers and peasants, the struggle against imperialism, and the desire to establish a socialist society inspired this initiative. At that time, India was under British colonial rule. Along with the country’s independence, the question of ending economic exploitation and social inequality also became important to the revolutionaries.
The Tashkent founding initiative of 1920 and the Communist Conference held in Kanpur on 26 December 1925 are two important milestones in the history of the communist movement in India. The Kanpur Conference played a special role in organizing the communist movement within India.
