More than 5,000 schools in the country have no students. 70 percent of the schools with no enrollment at all in the 2024-25 academic year are in West Bengal and Telangana.
Out of 10.13 lakh government schools in the country, the number of schools with no students is 5,149. The number of schools with a student population between zero and ten has also increased by leaps and bounds in the country.
This picture has been captured in various studies before. Such a horrifying picture has emerged in the data of the Union Education Ministry recently presented in Parliament.
Despite the bold slogans like 'Self-reliant India' or 'Forward Bangla', the country's future generation is not coming to study in government schools. A large portion of them feel that they are actually unable to study.

In West Bengal, 22 out of 23 districts have at least 10 schools with no students enrolled. In Telangana, each of the 33 districts has at least 10 'studentless' schools.
The number of schools with 0-10 students has increased by 24 percent in the last 2 years. In the 2022-23 academic year, this number was 52,503. In the 2024-25 academic year, it increased to 65,054.
According to the Union Education Ministry, schools with 0-10 student enrollment now account for 6.42 percent of the total government schools in the country. Roughly, at least one out of every 19 schools has less than 10 students. In some, it is completely zero.
