The country has never been in such a shameful situation since independence. The CPI(M) Polit Bureau has said this regarding the announcement of a 'thirty-day grace period' for India to buy oil from Russia.
The Polit Bureau demands that the Modi government should now appeal to stop the war to correct the mistakes. So that peace can return. The country's self-respect can be restored.
The Narendra Modi government has faced extreme humiliation in the country and the world over the statement of the US Treasury Secretary. Scott Besant's statement said that the Treasury Department is allowing India to buy oil for its refineries with a temporary 30-day exemption.
It also said, "India is an essential partner of America. It is expected that India will increase its oil purchases from America." The question has been raised across the country as to who gave America permission to buy oil from India? CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby said, "Since when did the permission of others become necessary to take decisions for the needs of the country? Such a shameful situation has never happened in the history of independent India."
Baby said, "The government should tell us whether we are independent or have become America's puppets." CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, "India's sovereignty is not a matter of anyone's approval. It is unthinkable that India is seeking America's permission to import oil. With whom and what to trade is entirely India's own business. Our national dignity and energy security cannot wait for the approval of any 'superpower'."
The Congress has also strongly criticised the Modi government for abandoning the country's independent foreign policy. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge have demanded accountability from the Modi government. The Polit Bureau said, "The Modi government is silent on the US-Israeli imposition of an illegal war. India's independent foreign policy is being undermined. The long-standing position of anti-imperialist and non-alignment is being weakened. This role of the Modi government is highly condemnable."
The US has sunk an Iranian ship in the Indian Ocean by firing from a submarine while it was returning from a joint naval exercise in Visakhapatnam, India. India has not made arrangements for the safe return of the Iranian ship. On the other hand, Sri Lanka has rushed to rescue another Iranian armed ship after seeing it off its coast. The Politburo has also condemned this role of India, which is playing a leading role in South Asia.
The Politburo said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel just before the start of the war also shows that independent foreign policy is mortgaged to the US The Politburo said that Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in a war situation. India's energy security is uncertain with this important route for oil and gas transportation blocked. At this time, President Trump's administration has mercifully given India a 30-day 'permission' to buy oil from Russia. Like pouring salt on a cut wound, an American official has made it clear that it is not possible to give India the same concessions as China. It has been made clear that America is only protecting its own interests in the trade deal.
