CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby strongly condemned the Delhi Police’s action against social activist Sonam Wangchuk and Abhijit Deepak, founder of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP). In a post on the social media platform X on Saturday, he alleged that instead of taking action against those responsible for the NEET question paper leak, the central government is more interested in suppressing peaceful protests.
M.A. Baby writes, “I strongly condemn the detention of Sonam Wangchuk and Abhijit Deepak by the Delhi Police. Instead of removing the Education Minister—under whose tenure scandals like question paper leaks occurred—or taking action against the system that ruins the futures of millions of students, the government is taking harsh measures against peaceful protesters.”
He further asserted, “This reflects the authoritarian attitude of the Modi government. Stifling dissent can never be a substitute for accountability.”
It is worth noting that on Saturday morning, the Delhi Police shifted Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike. The police maintain that he was admitted to the hospital in accordance with the advice of medical specialists and the directives of the Delhi High Court.
Meanwhile, Abhijit Deepak, the founder of CJP, alleged that he was beaten and detained during the police operation. He subsequently announced the start of an indefinite hunger strike.
The Delhi Police stated that Wangchuk was transferred to the hospital to provide him with essential medical care. At the same time, the protesters have been urged to peacefully vacate the protest site at Jantar Mantar.
Incidentally, Sonam Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 in support of the CJP-led movement protesting against irregularities in the NEET examination and allegations regarding student deaths linked to the ensuing controversy.
