Billionaires hold political power in decade of super rich, says Oxfam Report.
The wealth of the world's 'dollar billionaires' has increased by $2.5 trillion in a year, according to a recent report by Oxfam.
Oxfam estimates that the amount of money that has increased in a year could have eliminated extreme poverty in the world 26 times over. The report suggests that the pockets of the super-rich are filling up at an unusually high rate during the far-right's heyday.
The report says that while the wealth of the super-rich is growing, nearly half of the world is still living in poverty. One in four people do not have enough to eat.
An Oxfam report has called the last decade the decade of billionaires.
Billion means one billion. Converting from dollars to taka, one billion dollars is about 100 thousand crore taka.
The report says that for the first time in the world, the number of dollar billionaires has reached 3,000. At the same time, inequality has increased dramatically.
It is worth noting that India is also among the top countries in the world in terms of inequality.
The Oxfam report says that a survey was conducted in 66 countries around the world. Almost half said that the rich are buying elections. That is why, regardless of the election results, public protests are repeatedly taking to the streets.
The report says that extraordinary wealth is now becoming political power. Billionaires are 4,000 times more likely to hold the balance of political power than the average citizen. Crores of people are trapped in the poverty trap. But the opportunity for this section to influence changes in government policies is limited. This section has to take to the streets again and again to demand demands. They are the ones who are repeatedly subjected to authoritarian repression.
The Oxfam report urges governments to adopt policies that break this cycle of extreme inequality to protect democracy and people's rights.
