The Election Commission must ensure free and fair elections. Electoral reforms are essential for this purpose. The CPI(M) is launching a nationwide campaign pressing for this demand.
A meeting of the CPI(M) Central Committee was held in Delhi. Following the three-day meeting, General Secretary M.A. Baby addressed a press conference. He stated that the party would also reach out to various opposition parties during the course of this campaign.
The Central Committee has called for a campaign covering five key issues, including electoral reform. Particular emphasis has been placed on the reservation of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies. Although the legislation has been passed, the reservation is not being implemented due to a condition linked to the delimitation process; the CPI(M) has demanded the removal of this condition.
A statement from the Central Committee announced the ‘Jail Bharo’ (Fill the Jails) programme organized by worker and peasant organizations for August 10, extending support to the initiative. Campaigns will also be conducted in favour of this programme, led by central trade unions and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha.
Additionally, the Central Committee decided to mobilize the public to protest against imperialist aggression in Palestine, Venezuela, and Cuba.
The CPI(M) has extended its support to the students’ ‘Parliament March’ scheduled for July 20, demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. The Central Committee has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health of Sonam Wangchuk, who is on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The BJP government remains unwilling to accept the demand for the resignation of Minister Pradhan, who is held responsible for the crisis in the education sector. The Central Committee has condemned the attitude of the Modi government.
Serious allegations of a lack of transparency are being raised regarding one election after another in the country. Various anti-BJP parties are questioning the Election Commission’s impartiality. The CPI(M) Central Committee has announced its decision to launch a movement for electoral reform.
