Gyanesh Kumar must resign. Otherwise, he must be censured in accordance with procedure. The voting rights of those unjustly removed from the electoral rolls must be restored. Without this, it is impossible to restore the country’s democracy and the credibility of the Election Commission.
CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby stated this in a social media post on Sunday. He described yesterday’s (September 26) statement as an attempt to save face for the Election Commission. Baby remarked that the statement failed to address the significant questions raised regarding the Election Commission and the SIR.
Baby stated that former Kerala Chief Secretary G.G. Thomson has revealed a serious matter. Gyanesh Kumar had proposed that Thomson run as the BJP candidate from the Pathanamthitta constituency, with an offer of a ministerial post at the Centre should he win. This incident clearly indicates where Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s loyalties lie.
Baby stated that while Gyanesh Kumar holds the position of Chief Election Commissioner, he is acting on behalf of the BJP-RSS.
During Saturday’s meeting, the Commission decided that the agenda would be shared with the three members prior to the meeting and that the proceedings would be recorded. Baby pointed this out, noting that the statement itself is an admission of the farcical path the Commission is following.
It is worth noting that over seventy opposition MPs submitted a motion in the Lok Sabha, in accordance with the rules, seeking the censure and removal of Gyanesh Kumar; however, the motion was not taken up for consideration. The opposition may move a fresh motion.
