There are differences of opinion among the various parties on the platform. However, all the parties are united in opposing the policies of the Modi government.
Just before the meeting of the ‘India’ platform, on Sunday, one of the general secretaries of the Congress, Jairam Ramesh, made this demand.
On Monday, June 8, the ‘India’ platform meeting was held at the Constitution Club in Delhi. Ramesh said, “Twenty-three political parties have decided to attend the ‘India’ Janabandhan meeting. Some parties have said that they will not be able to attend the meeting. However, they have also confirmed their stand against the policies of the Modi government.
Ramesh said, “All parties are opposing the move to take away voting rights, daily attacks on the Constitution and the central agency being pushed behind opposition political leaders.”
This platform was formed with a call to protect the country’s constitutional democracy before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After the elections, questions were raised in political circles about the role of this platform. Especially the role of the Congress was questioned.
Shortly before the meeting, CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby had strongly objected to the role of the Congress in the campaign for the assembly elections in Kerala.
The CPI(M) general secretary said that in an alliance formed with the aim of fighting the BJP, it is politically unacceptable to accuse a partner party of being in league with the BJP. In the letter, he made it clear that the Congress leadership should clarify its position on this issue before the India Manch meeting on June 8. Otherwise, the main purpose of forming the Manch will be questioned.
Baby, however, reiterated that the CPI(M) is in favour of strengthening opposition unity. The CPI(M) also sent a copy of the letter to other parties on the ‘India’ platform.
DMK leader Stalin Karunanidhi also expressed his anger over the Congress’s role. He accused the Congress of supporting TVK without sufficient consultation with the DMK after the elections in Tamil Nadu. JMM leader Hemant Soren, who is sitting in Jharkhand, also said that the Congress has unilaterally announced a candidate for a Rajya Sabha seat without any consultation.
Meanwhile, Ramesh said, “Like Bharat, there is unity in diversity within ‘India’.” He said, “All parties are taking a stand against the Modi government’s economic policies, which attack the common man and continuously increase prices, or against the policy of destroying the future of the youth.”
Meanwhile, special activity is being observed within the Trinamool Congress surrounding the ‘India’ platform meeting. The party is facing disintegration after the defeat in the West Bengal elections. In the past, Trinamool has stayed away from several programs of the ‘India’ platform.
