The Chief Election Commissioner must be removed. The SIR (Special Summary Revision) process must be halted immediately. The names of all genuine voters must be restored to the electoral rolls. The existing law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners must be scrapped. The agitation will continue until these demands are met. The CPI(M) Politburo announced these objectives on Tuesday, September 29, following the Leftists' march to the Election Commission office.
Left-wing groups have been staging protests across the country throughout the week. This morning in Delhi, police intercepted a march by Left leaders and activists heading towards Nirvachan Sadan. CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby and other Left leaders were forcibly dragged into vehicles. The Politburo has condemned the incident.

The Politburo stated that the Delhi Police used force to stop a peaceful procession. Activists from Left-wing parties were detained. Female activists were detained by male police personnel. The Delhi Police acted aggressively, dragging and detaining them.
CPI(M) Politburo member and West Bengal State Secretary Mohammad Salim has also strongly condemned this conduct by the police. In a statement, he noted that protests are taking place across the state—as they are nationwide—against the completely illegal manner in which Gyanesh Kumar has deleted the names of millions of voters from the electoral rolls to serve the political agenda of the RSS and BJP, and continues to harass poor, marginalized people under the guise of 'SIR' (Systematic Identification of Errors) procedures.
Regarding the appointment of Election Commissioners, Left-wing parties demand the repeal of the 2023 Act enacted by the Modi government. They insist that appointments be made in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines. The Supreme Court's directive stipulates the formation of a selection committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; this committee would select the names of the Election Commissioners.
The Delhi Police harassed and detained several leaders, including party General Secretary M.A. Baby, CPI(M) Politburo members B.V. Raghavulu and R. Arun Kumar, senior leaders Brinda Karat and Subhashini Ali, Delhi State Secretary Anurag Saxena, and Rajya Sabha MP V. Sivadasan.
The protest was led by CPI Delhi State Secretary Dinesh Varshne, CPI(ML) Central Committee member Sucheta De, RSP leader Rajiv Dimri, Forward Bloc Delhi State Secretary Dharmendra Verma, and CGPI leader Birju Naik.
