Following the victory in New York, the Democratic candidate has also won in Los Angeles—America’s second-largest city. Like Zohran Mamdani, Nithya Raman—who has now emerged victorious—is also of Indian origin. She, too, advocates for a politics centered on an economy that serves the public good.
CPI(M) General Secretary M. A. Baby has congratulated Raman on her victory. In a social media post, he noted that two individuals who identify as socialists have been elected as mayors in two of America’s largest cities. In Los Angeles, too, the public has voted in favor of housing, healthcare, and transportation for all. Nithya Raman opposes the policy of handing over all resources to corporate control.
Baby stated that Donald Trump’s brand of far-right, hate-driven politics has suffered another setback in these elections. Lula’s victory in Brazil, Netanyahu’s failure to secure a majority in Israel, and the fall of Vučić in Serbia clearly indicate growing public discontent with the politics of division and hatred. At the same time, support for democratic and progressive forces is on the rise.
In the race for mayor of Los Angeles, Nithya defeated long-time politician Karen Bass—who is also a Democrat. Raman had previously served as a member of the City Council. Her campaign focused on issues such as homelessness, affordable housing, and the harassment of residents under the guise of anti-immigration sentiment.
