The police do not even touch the miscreants involved in public attacks; yet, Surajit Shee—a science activist and a young man who speaks up for rationalism—was arrested after being picked up from his home in the dead of night.
Progressive circles have strongly condemned the police’s conduct. Bijoy Pal, the West Midnapore district secretary of the CPI(M), has voiced his protest.
Among those affected is Surajit Shee—a science activist, social media influencer, and staff member at the ‘Janakantha’ news portal.
Surajit was arrested based on a complaint filed by a member of the Bajrang Dal. Notably, the Bajrang Dal and its members themselves face numerous allegations of inciting religious tension and engaging in acts of violence and intimidation.

Many individuals and organizations across the district and the state—all of whom subscribe to progressive ideals—have demanded the unconditional release of this science activist.
The RSS and its affiliate organization, Bajrang Dal, have alleged the desecration of Hindu deities. They have also accused the individual of expressing opinions contrary to the views held by the Prime Minister and the state’s Chief Minister. Surajit Shi has been arrested based on a complaint filed by Sayandeep Das, a member of the Bajrang Dal, in Dantan.
Strongly criticizing the incident, Bijoy Pal stated that the fascist BJP is replicating in this state the same actions it has taken in Delhi—measures aimed at silencing dissent against the government. Meanwhile, the attackers who vandalized the bookstall in the presence of the police remain at large. Pal affirmed that they stand firmly by Surajit Shee and will continue to support him under any circumstances until his release.
Surajit’s ‘Janakantha’
Through various videos on his YouTube channel, Surajit Shee promotes a scientific mindset by raising questions about a wide range of topics. The channel has over 150,000 subscribers. Surajit Shee consistently encourages people to approach and evaluate everything through the lens of logic and scientific reasoning.
Surajit, a graduate living in a rural area, carries out work involving photocopying and computer services at his home. He lives with his elderly parents, his wife, and their one-and-a-half-year-old child.
