More than 50 students of Jamia Millia Islamia on Tuesday protested inside their campus against an event organised to mark the 100th anniversary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Members of various student organisations, including SFI, took part in the protest.
Amid the presence of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force on the campus, the students started chanting slogans like "Jamia is our university, not your branch". They also raised slogans like "Inquilab Zindabad" across the campus, holding placards that read "Reject saffronisation of campus".
"The RSS was trying to force their chief guest into the auditorium through one of the many entrances, but we were protesting right outside the auditorium," one of the protesting students told the media. SFI and AISA, along with leftist student organisations, along with the students of the Shoe University, participated in the protest. The RSS officials present were asked to leave the campus immediately.
The SFI had opposed the "Yuba Kumbh" event organised to mark the centenary of the RSS a day earlier. The authorities were told that the event was "directly provocative". AISA Delhi president and Jamia student Saeed alleged discriminatory treatment by the university administration. "This is the same Jamia where other student organisations are not even allowed to discuss without the intervention of security personnel," he said. "Yet RSS has been given permission to hold a full event in an air-conditioned hall."
He also said that students will continue to resist such programs in the future to protect our democratic rights.
