The Prime Minister is expressing fears of a return to widespread poverty during his foreign tour. Yet, the same Narendra Modi has refused to take effective decisions to combat poverty in the country.
CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby said this in response to the decision taken after the fuel price hike.
The Prime Minister is currently on a foreign tour. He posted a picture of himself interacting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on social media on Wednesday. There is also talk of a picture of him giving Meloni a ‘Melody’ toffee. Earlier, on May 17, Modi had expressed concern about poverty in a speech in The Hague, Netherlands.
Baby reminded that in just four days, the price of petrol and diesel has been increased by four rupees per liter. The price of domestic and commercial cooking gas has increased by leaps and bounds.
Baby wrote on social media on Wednesday, “The one and only purpose of Modi’s policies is to please the owners of corporate groups like Adani and Ambani. At the same time, he is pleasing US President Donald Trump. As a result of which, the burden is being placed on the shoulders of the country’s farmers, workers and small businessmen.”
In his speech in The Hague, Modi called the current decade a ‘decade of disaster’. He mentioned the crisis in West Asia due to the Corona pandemic. He warned of a bigger danger if the crisis between America and Israel with Iran is not stopped now.
The fact is that the Modi government has done nothing more than express concern over America’s unilateral move to impose war. The slightest condemnation was not heard in the statement of his Ministry of External Affairs.
Meanwhile, Baby said, “There is an extreme crisis of gas cylinders. Many have to rely on the black market. The price of fuel has increased twice in a row, and there is a risk of further increase in the next few days. This is already affecting daily necessities.”
Baby also criticized Modi for the falling value of the rupee. He said, “The value of the rupee has reached an all-time low. There are fewer job opportunities in the country, fewer income opportunities. The cost of what you want to buy is high, but you don’t have the money.” Baby said, “This time there is a risk that the rainfall will be less than average. There is a shortage of fertilizer. Instead of taking steps to eliminate the shortage, the government is telling farmers to reduce the use of fertilizer. The situation has reached the limit of tolerance.”
